How to Check Your Self-Retracting Lifeline
Faulty safety equipment puts your workers at risk in the event of a fall. Inspecting your SRLs before each use is one of the best ways to ensure your employees’ safety.
Follow these tips to perform a thorough SRL inspection:
1. Check Metal Components
Start by checking the fall indicator. If you see red at your SRL’s connection point, this means the fall indicator has been tripped, and the device should be removed from service.
Next, check the snap hook to ensure it opens and closes properly. Confirm the snap hook isn’t bent or deformed, and push on the gate to make sure you can’t force it open.
2. Examine the Housing
Confirm all fasteners are tightly in place. You should also inspect the label for the part number, serial number, batch number and manufacture date.
3. Inspect the Cable
Check the cable for tears, cuts, kinks, frays, and burns along its entire length. Also, make sure the cable isn’t tangled in the housing, which could prevent the SRL from arresting a fall.
4. Conduct a Strike Test
Perform a strike test by gripping the handle and pulling the cable downward quickly. Be sure to put all the pressure above the fall indicator to avoid triggering it.
The braking mechanism should engage right away. If it doesn’t, then avoid using the SRL.
