Collection: Passive Fall Protection Systems

Passive fall protection systems like guardrails and warning lines protect workers without requiring human interaction or special equipment. Active fall protection systems require workers to wear a full body harness connected to an anchor point via a self-retracting lifeline, lanyard, or other connector. Passive systems rank higher in the hierarchy of controls because they eliminate the fall hazard rather than relying on fall arrest.

The hierarchy of controls prioritizes hazard elimination and passive fall protection over active systems. Use guardrail systems when feasible because they protect all workers in the area without requiring each person to wear fall arrest equipment. Personal fall arrest systems are appropriate when guardrails are not practical, such as on leading edges or during steel erection, where the work area constantly changes.

Guardrail systems prevent falls rather than arresting them, so there is no suspended worker requiring rescue. However, a competent person should still assess the work area for other fall hazards and ensure guardrails are properly installed. Sites using active fall protection, like personal fall arrest systems, still must have a rescue plan in place.

Warning lines are a form of fall prevention that calls attention to areas with additional risk. OSHA permits warning lines for roofing work on low-slope roofs when combined with a safety monitor. Workers who must go past the warning line toward the edge still need fall restraint or fall arrest systems.

OSHA 1926.502(b) covers guardrail system requirements including 42-inch top rail height and 200 lb. force resistance. OSHA 1926.502(f) covers warning line systems including 500 lb. tensile strength and 34-39 inch height range. Both standards are part of OSHA's fall protection regulations under Subpart M.
