Suspension trauma occurs when a worker hangs motionless after a fall, causing blood to pool in the legs and potentially leading to unconsciousness or worse. Relief straps create a step loop that allows workers to stand and maintain circulation while awaiting rescue. OSHA recommends trauma straps as part of fall protection plans when rescue time may exceed a few minutes.

Regular lanyards connect workers to anchors for fall arrest or restraint and include shock absorption.

Tool lanyards secure tools to harnesses or anchor points in order to prevent injuries to workers below. They're rated by weight capacity (typically 2-15 lbs per tool) and don't include shock absorbers.

Never use tool lanyards for personal fall protection.
