Collection: Overhead SRLs (CLASS 1)

An SRL houses a retractable cable that extends as you move and automatically retracts to eliminate slack. When a fall occurs, an internal braking mechanism engages immediately and arrests the fall within about 2 feet. The energy-absorbing system reduces impact forces on a worker's body while keeping them suspended safely until rescue.

Lanyards have a fixed length, usually 4 to 6 feet, and stay that length whether you're moving or standing still. This means more slack when you're close to your anchor and potential free fall distance of up to 6 feet before the shock absorber engages. 

SRLs automatically extend and retract as you move, keeping the lifeline taut at all times. If you fall, an SRL locks within about 2 feet of free fall compared to a lanyard's 6 feet. SRLs give you more mobility and significantly less fall distance, making them ideal for jobs where you're constantly moving at height.

Consider your anchor point location, required cable length, work area size, and job site conditions. Compact models like Pygmy Hog work well in confined spaces. Extended-length models like Warthog or Hybrid Hog cover larger work areas. If you need rescue capability, go with Razorback. Make sure your choice meets OSHA requirements and ANSI standards for your specific work.

Inspect your SRL before each use—check for cable damage, housing cracks, and verify proper retraction and braking. A competent person must conduct formal inspections at least annually per OSHA requirements. Make sure to follow the manufacturer's service intervals and document all inspections and maintenance as well.

Overhead SRLs are designed for vertical overhead anchor applications where the unit mounts above the worker. Using Class 1 overhead SRLs horizontally or at foot level can increase free-fall distance and reduce effectiveness.
