OSHA 1926.502(d)(8) requires horizontal lifelines to be designed, installed, and used under the supervision of a qualified person as part of a complete fall arrest system maintaining a safety factor of at least two. Lifelines must have a minimum breaking strength of 5,000 lbs. per user attached. Choose horizontal lifelines when workers need to traverse across elevated surfaces. Each user on a vertical system requires a separate lifeline.

Temporary horizontal lifeline systems are designed for construction sites and temporary jobs where fall protection needs change as work progresses. They install quickly without permanent modifications to structures and pack up for reuse. Permanent engineered lifeline systems suit facilities requiring ongoing fall protection for maintenance access. Proper tension is critical for horizontal lifeline safety. Use the included turnbuckle tensioner to adjust cable or rope tension until the system achieves appropriate sag, typically per manufacturer specifications. Insufficient tension increases fall distance while excessive tension amplifies forces on anchorage points. The energy absorber functions effectively only when the lifeline is properly tensioned. Inspect and re-tension before each use.
