Most manufacturers recommend replacing harnesses every five years or immediately after any fall or accident. 

Inspect harnesses for frays in webbing, worn buckles, damaged stitching, or faded materials from UV exposure. Check all connection points and D-rings for cracks or deformation.

Hunting harnesses are specifically designed for tree stands. They have features like integrated tree straps, lineman's loops for safe climbing, and tether systems that keep you connected while seated. They're certified to ASTM F2123-19 standards for tree stand safety. Rock climbing harnesses aren't designed for the static hanging and extended wear required in tree stands.

A tree stand harness should fit snugly without restricting movement or circulation. Shoulder straps should run straight down your chest without gaps. Leg straps should be snug but allow two fingers underneath. The back D-ring should sit between your shoulder blades. A proper fit isn't just more comfortable, it's much safer.

Yes, you should be connected from the moment you leave the ground until you're back down. Use a lineman's loop or climbing strap while climbing up and down. Once in your stand, connect your tether while sitting or standing. Never disconnect until both feet are safely on the ground.
