When moving between anchorage points on structures, workers must disconnect from one anchor to connect to the next. During that moment, there's no fall protection. A dual SRL connector solves this by providing two connection points. Workers connect the second attachment before releasing the first, maintaining continuous fall arrest protection throughout the transition. This is essential for tower climbing, steel erection, and any work requiring movement across multiple anchor points.

Carabiners can connect to various fall protection components including harness D-rings, shock-absorbing lanyards, rope grabs, and anchorage points. However, ensure the carabiner gate opening accommodates the connection point and that the connector is compatible with the equipment. Never connect a carabiner to another carabiner or snap hook, as this can create an incompatible connection that may fail under load. Always follow manufacturer instructions for proper use.

Conduct regular inspection before each use by checking for cracks, corrosion, excessive wear, or deformation in the body and gate. Verify the locking mechanism functions properly and the gate closes completely without binding. Check that the gate spring returns the gate to the closed position. Look for sharp edges or burrs that could damage rope or webbing. Remove any carabiner from service immediately if damage is found or if the connector has been involved in a fall arrest event.

Both are connectors used in fall protection systems, but they differ in design. Carabiners have a spring-loaded gate that opens inward and locks automatically or with a twist-lock mechanism. Snap hooks are fastener-derived pieces of gear but are generally attached to a harness, lanyard, or SRL, and not operational as an independent part of your PFAS.. For fall protection, both must meet the same ANSI Z359.12 strength requirements. Malta Dynamics offers both connector types depending on your application and preference.

ANSI Z359.12 requires carabiners used in fall arrest systems to have a minimum tensile strength of 5,000 pounds along the major axis and a gate strength of 3,600 pounds in all directions. Malta Dynamics carabiners meet both requirements. The 3,600 lb. gate strength is critical because it prevents the gate from opening if the carabiner contacts a structural edge during a fall. Always verify your connector is rated for fall protection, not just general use.
